Bike Week

Category: Health Information

Bike Week – 15th-24th March 2019

Bike Week is all about cycling, something many of us only enjoyed in our childhood. In actual fact it’s a very healthy, low-impact exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels. It’s not only fun but a great way to relieve stress and enjoy the outdoors. It can also protect you from some serious diseases such as heart attack, stroke, obesity, depression and arthritis.

Cycling is an aerobic activity which means your heart, lungs and blood vessels all get a work out. You can moderate your intensity and pace until your fitness levels improve. Every effort helps to improve your overall fitness and health.

The health benefits of regular cycling can include:

  • Increased cardiovascular fitness
  • Muscle strength and flexibility
  • Improved joint mobility
  • Decreased stress levels which can help reduce anxiety and depression
  • Decreased body fat levels
  • Prevention and management of disease
  • Improved sleep
  • Strengthened bones and posture

The added environmental benefit of cycling is that it’s emission free. This helps to reduce road traffic, pollution, noise and congestion which is a great reason to ride instead of drive.

When starting a new exercise program, you should always consult with your regular GP, especially if you have a pre-existing health condition. If you don’t have a usual practice, make a booking here to see one of our experienced after-hours doctors.
